Tour to Woodett’s Diner & Minden Mills (May 31, 2024) by Tim Ilian

Reno area club members enjoyed a scenic 65-mile drive to Gardnerville from South Reno, on Friday May 31st, to meet Gardnerville area members at Woodett’s Diner for a Bistro lunch. The Porsche-filled parking lot outside Woodett’s quickly became a popular viewing area for those passing by, as you can imagine.

Remon and Christelle Zamalis, the owners of Woodett’s, closed the restaurant after their breakfast service, then reset everything and opened it for us to savor a private, white-tablecloth lunch. Here, the 65 club members that attended were treated to a delicious three course French-influenced meal to remember (especially the chocolate mousse). Entree choices were Beef burgundy, fish in pastry, and chicken in cream sauce with mushrooms.

After lunch, the convoy of Porsches was given an escort by the Douglas County Sheriff’s department as we moved on to the Minden Mill distillery, set in a group of historic buildings in downtown Minden. It was quite a sight, and probably the only time we’ve had flashing lights behind us and not needed to pull over! Arriving at Minden Mill, we were welcomed by Elaine Shevlin, Director of the Mill, and staged our cars in front of the main building for a series of photo opportunities.

The attendees then split into two groups, the first group taking the extensive tour of the facilities, while the second group sat down to taste the bourbon, whiskey and vodkas distilled on-site at this Foley family property. The tour covered not only the remarkable facilities and the distilling process but also shared the history of Minden and the Mill itself. Once the first tour and tastings were done, the groups switched over to complete their experience at the Mill.

Which group do you think is having the most fun, the group above or the group below)???

That was a trick question … it’s group 2 in both sets of pictures.

The feedback on the event has been very positive, with suggestions to include wine tasting from the eclectic collection of both domestic and international Foley family wineries. The Bistro lunch at Woodett’s also provided an opportunity for many to discover, or re-discover, the culinary talents of Chef Remon and the warm hospitality Woodett’s has to offer. For those that participated, thank you for such a great turnout, and for those that missed it, be sure to keep an eye on our future events calendar as this epicurean adventure may well become an annual outing.
