Six vehicles showed up for the Sierra Nevada Region’s inaugural back roads off-pavement tour on Wednesday, September 16, 2020. Two of them were actually Porsches, one Cayenne and one Macan. But all were welcome. After all, “It’s the people,” and there were ten of them. The group assembled at 8:30am at Fuji Park in Carson City and then lead by Terry and El Burns proceeded south to the Johnson Lane OHV staging area in the northeast corner of the Carson Valley. From there it was three hours of dirt road travel over Sunrise Pass Road to Smith Valley. The smoke from recent fires obscured the views for the most part, but it also gave our cabin filters a good test and it was still an interesting drive. Once back on pavement the group made a beeline for Iggy and Squiggy’s Junction Bar in Holbrook Junction near Topaz Lake. There they enjoyed grilled burgers, hot dogs and tacos along with a glass of beer, all safely outdoors on beautiful green grass under a grove of majestic cottonwoods. All in all it was a good time, despite the smoke. We may do it again!
