Plan to be in Mammoth Lakes September 24-26 for the eleventh annual Mammoth High Alpine Porsche Tour. There will be drives Saturday morning and afternoon, September 25, followed by a display of participant Porsches on Canyon Blvd Saturday afternoon and evening. As usual, the Sierra Nevada Region is your host region with Mark Coronado (Mammoth resident) doing the planning and making the arrangements for the Tour events in and around Mammoth Lakes. The Sierra Nevada Region will be holding a drive to Mammoth Lakes from Reno on Friday, September 24 (see separate event listing), which Tour participants from other regions are welcome to join. Since we are holding this event in late September this year, rather than on Father’s Day weekend, you can expect cooler temperatures and a spectacular show of fall color around the Mammoth and June Lakes. Your Porsches will perform even better in the cooler air.
The High Alpine Porsche Tour is a weekend of driving designed for all Porsches from the classic 356’s to the newest supercars and everything in between, including the Cayenne and Macan SUVs. This tour is designed for fun and camaraderie. The highlight is a 100-mile, 2-hour tour that takes you down the spine of the Eastern Sierra, around the June lakes, past Mono Lake, and across the high desert. You’ll enjoy a handful of epic S-turns, stretches of straight highway and rolling hills and whoop-de-do’s (Porsche technical term) that will send your belly into your throat at the right speeds.
This is pay as you go event, but this year we will ask participants from all regions to register in advance so we know how many are coming and can better plan this tour. Please list the name of your PCA Region in the Comment section when you register.
Schedule:
Friday 9/24/2021
7:00-9:00 PM: Meet & Greet. The weekend starts with a Meet & Greet at the Eatery (18 Lake Mary Rd, corner of Lake Mary & Minaret) in Mammoth Lakes. Grab a beer or a glass of wine and join us upstairs for complimentary light appetizers. Pickup a packet with schedule, maps and instructions, either here or Saturday morning at the Tour Check-in.
Saturday 9/25/2021
7:30-9:00 AM: Tour Check-in. Meet in the parking lot in front of Puerto Vallarta Restaurant (3325 Main St, formerly Basecamp Cafe) in Mammoth Lakes. Sign the PCA Liability Release and pickup a packet with schedule, maps and instructions. The hour and a half before the Driver’s Meeting gives us time to grab a cup of coffee and a muffin, croissant or bagel at Schat’s Bakery or eat breakfast at Puerto Vallarta, fill the gas tank and prepare for the 100-mile drive.
9:00-9:30AM: Driver’s Meeting. We discuss Safety and Route, define the different Tour Groups, introduce the Group Leaders, and lineup our Porsches in our respective Tour Groups.
9:30AM: Main Drive. We begin roll-off promptly at 9:30.
12:30-2:00 PM: Lunch. After a morning of driving rolling roads and fast highways through the high desert and scenic mountain landscapes, we meet back at the Eatery for lunch.
2:00-3:00 PM: Drive to Mammoth Lakes Basin. Meet in The Eatery parking lot for this short and leisurely drive to the Lakes Basin that winds through several alpine lakes, including Lake Mary, Lake George, and Twin Lakes. You will have numerous photo opportunities, especially at Twin Lakes with the Twin Lakes waterfall as a backdrop, so bring your camera or smartphone!
3:00-4:00 PM: Carwash. This hour is set aside to wash and prepare our Porsches for the car show, for those that want to display. The Mammoth Chevron carwash will have two hoses and buckets set out and a bay reserved for cars in the show.
4:00-8:00 PM: Car Display and Dinner. Display your cars in the lineup on Canyon Blvd between the Village Gondola and Hillside Drive. Walk across Minaret Rd and have dinner in our reserved upstairs room at Burgers Restaurant, whenever you want.
Sunday 9/26/2021
9:00 AM: Breakfast. Breakfast on your own.
10:00 AM: Minarets Drive. On your own. Before leaving Mammoth, either individually or as a group, take the opportunity for a short drive to view the beautiful spires and spine of the Sierra backcountry. Map provided. Be sure to have your camera handy.
