Plan to be in Mammoth Lakes, Father’s Day weekend June 17-19, for the 12th annual Mammoth High Alpine Porsche Tour. There will be a Meet & Greet dinner Friday night June 17, with drives Saturday morning and afternoon June 18, followed by a dinner Saturday night. As usual, the Sierra Nevada Region is your host region with Mark Coronado (former Mammoth resident) doing the planning and making the arrangements for Tour events in and around Mammoth Lakes. The Sierra Nevada Region will be holding a drive to Mammoth Lakes from Reno on Friday, June 17th (signup at snv.pca.org/events/drive-to-mammoth-for-the-high-alpine-porsche-tour-2/), which participants from other regions are welcome to join.
The High Alpine Porsche Tour is a weekend of driving designed for all Porsches from the classic 356’s to the newest supercars and everything in between, including the Cayenne and Macan SUVs. This tour is designed for fun and camaraderie. The highlight is a 100+ mile, 2-hour tour that takes you down the spine of the Eastern Sierra, around the June lakes, past Mono Lake, and across the high desert. You’ll enjoy a handful of epic S-turns, stretches of straight highway and rolling hills and whoop-de-do’s (Porsche technical term) that may send your Porsche airborne and your belly into your throat, at the right speeds.
This is pay as you go event, but we ask participants from all regions to register in advance so we know how many are coming and can better plan this tour. Please list the name of your PCA Region in the Comment section when you register.
7:00-9:00 PM: Meet & Greet. The weekend starts with a Meet & Greet at the Eatery (18 Lake Mary Rd, corner of Lake Mary & Minaret) in Mammoth Lakes. Grab a beer or a glass of wine and join us upstairs for complimentary light appetizers. Pickup a packet with schedule, maps and instructions, either here or Saturday morning at the Tour Check-in.
7:30-8:30 AM: Tour Check-in. Meet in the parking lot in front of Puerto Vallarta Restaurant (3325 Main St, formerly Basecamp Cafe) in Mammoth Lakes. Sign the PCA Liability Release and pickup a packet with schedule, maps and instructions. The hour and a half before the Driver’s Meeting gives us time to grab a cup of coffee and a muffin, croissant or bagel at Schat’s Bakery or eat breakfast at Puerto Vallarta, fill the gas tank and prepare for the 100+ mile drive.
8:30-8:45 AM: Driver’s Meeting. We discuss Safety and Route, define the different Tour Groups, introduce the Group Leaders, and tell you where to lineup your Porsches in their respective Tour Groups.
9:00AM: Main Drive. We begin roll-off promptly at 9:00.
12:00-2:00 PM: Lunch. After a morning of driving rolling roads and fast highways through the high desert and scenic mountain landscapes, we meet back in Mammoth Lakes at our lunch location (tbd).
2:00-5:00 PM: Self-Drives. From our lunch location, drive on your own to Mammoth Lakes Basin or Minaret Vista or just tour the town of Mammoth Lakes. The drive to the Lakes Basin winds through several alpine lakes, including Lake Mary, Lake George, and Twin Lakes. You will have numerous photo opportunities, especially at Twin Lakes with the Twin Lakes waterfall as a backdrop, so bring your camera or smartphone! The drive to Minaret Vista takes you past the Mammoth Mountain Main Lodge and on to the highest lookout point (9265′) in the Mammoth Lakes area. At Minaret Vista you’ll have a panoramic view of the Minarets, Mt Banner, Mt Ritter, the backside of Mammoth Mountain, Red’s Meadow, the far-away Sierra landscape and the White Mountains to the East.
6:00-8:00 PM: Dinner. Dinner is in our reserved upstairs room at Burgers Restaurant (6118 Minaret Rd). Reserved parking next to Burgers.
9:00 AM: Breakfast. Breakfast on your own.
10:00 AM: Self-Drives. If you didn’t take the opportunity Saturday, try the drives we recommended for Saturday.
